Farm Safety Basics for Workers and Families

Farming is one of the more dangerous occupations, but most accidents are preventable.

Machinery

Keep guards on PTO shafts and belts, switch off and wait for stop before clearing blockages, never ride on implements, and train anyone who operates machinery. Keep children away from working areas.

Chemicals

Wear PPE, store locked in original containers, follow label intervals, and keep a first-aid kit and emergency numbers where mixing happens.

Heat and fatigue

Work in cooler hours, take shade and water breaks, and recognise heat illness (dizziness, confusion, cramps): rest, cool and give fluids.

Animals and tools

Handle animals calmly with escape routes; keep tools sharp and stored; wear sturdy footwear.

Be ready

Know the nearest clinic, keep a basic first-aid kit and make sure more than one person knows how to use it.
