Manure is a valuable source of organic matter and nutrients, if handled correctly.
Rules for safe use
- Compost it first: heat in a well-managed pile kills most pathogens and weed seeds and stabilises nutrients.
- Apply early: put raw or part-composted manure on soil well before planting, and leave a gap (often 90–120 days) before harvest of crops eaten raw or growing near the ground.
- Do not apply to waterlogged or frozen soil, or near wells and streams.
- Incorporate soon after spreading to cut nitrogen loss and odour.
Rates
Manure nutrient content varies widely, so test it, and calculate the rate from the nutrient you want to supply. Heavy, repeated application can build up salts and phosphorus.
Wash hands and equipment after handling.
