A tractor is a long-term investment, so choose by need.
Start from the work
List the implements you will pull (plough, disc harrow, planter, trailer) and their power needs. Buy enough power to run the heaviest implement comfortably, with a margin, but not far more; oversized tractors waste fuel and compact soil.
Key choices
- Horsepower and weight for traction and implement size.
- Two-wheel or four-wheel drive: 4WD gives better traction on heavy or soft soils.
- Hydraulics and PTO matching your implements.
- Tyres suited to your soil.
Service matters
Check parts availability, a trained mechanic nearby and warranty terms before price. A cheaper tractor that waits weeks for parts costs more in lost work.
Compare running cost
Include fuel, maintenance and resale value, not just purchase price.
