Banana: Spacing, Potassium and Water

Banana grows fast and yields a lot per acre, but only if it is fed and watered regularly.

Spacing and suckers

Plant at the recommended spacing for the variety; overcrowding gives thin, late bunches. Keep one follower sucker per plant and remove extras so the mother plant gets the food.

Nutrition

Banana takes up a lot of potassium and nitrogen. Apply in many small doses through the season, ideally with drip, rather than a few large ones.

Water

Needs steady moisture; stress gives small fingers. Mulch to conserve it.

Support and harvest

Prop heavy bunches against wind. Cover bunches to protect skin, and cut when fingers are full and angles have rounded.
