Caring for and Reusing Jute Bags

Jute is renewable and reusable, but only if bags are looked after.

After emptying

Shake out dust and grain, and check for insects. Sun-dry bags fully on a clean surface; damp bags mould.

Inspect

Discard bags with large tears, oil or chemical stains, or mould. Mend small holes with strong thread.

Store

Fold or bundle clean, dry bags off the floor in a ventilated, rodent-proof room, away from sunlight that weakens fibre.

Re-use rules

Do not reuse bags that held chemicals, fertilizer or treated seed for food grain. Keep food-grain bags separate and labelled. Fumigate or clean infested bags before reuse.

End of life

Worn jute composts well and works as mulch or erosion control, so little goes to waste.
