Jute remains one of the most used packaging materials in agriculture: it is strong, natural and biodegradable, and suits grain, pulses and seed. To get the best from it, keep the following in mind.
What to look for in a bag
- Strength: a tight weave and strong stitching that survive loading and transport.
- Breathability: jute fibre lets air through, which lowers the risk of mould as long as the grain is kept dry.
- Cleanliness: a clean bag free of odours and foreign material, especially for food.
- The right size: a size that is easy to handle and fits your transport.
Keeping grain in good condition in storage
- Dry the grain properly before bagging.
- Stack bags on pallets or timber, away from the floor and walls.
- Choose a dry, well-ventilated store and avoid damp.
- Inspect the stock regularly for insects or mould.
