Jute: Growing, Retting and Fibre Quality

Jute is a fast crop that rewards good timing at harvest and care at retting.

Growing

Sow in well-prepared, moist soil, thin early to an even stand and weed twice in the first weeks. Jute grows tall quickly, so it suppresses later weeds.

Cutting

Cut at the small-pod stage: earlier gives weak, low-yield fibre, later gives coarse, woody fibre.

Retting

Bundle and submerge stalks in clean, slow-moving or still water, weighted so they stay under. Retting is finished when the fibre strips cleanly. Over-retting weakens it; dirty water darkens it. Wash and sun-dry fibre fully before baling.

Quality

Colour, strength, fineness and freedom from specks set the grade, and grade sets the price.
