Okra: A Hot-Season Vegetable That Pays

Okra thrives where many vegetables struggle, and a well-run plot gives pods for weeks.

Growing

Sow in warm soil, soaking seed first helps germination. Space plants to allow air and picking access. Feed in two or three small doses rather than one large one.

Harvest every 1–2 days

Pods go from tender to fibrous within a day or two in heat. Pick small, glossy pods often; leaving old pods on the plant tells it to stop flowering.

Watch for

Red spider mites and whiteflies in hot, dry weather, and yellow vein mosaic virus spread by whiteflies. Use resistant varieties and keep weeds, which shelter whitefly, under control.
