Organic farming can earn premiums, but it is a system change, not a product swap.
Steps
1. Check the market and standard: who will buy, at what premium, under which certification (national or export).
2. Learn the rules: allowed inputs, buffer zones, seed, records and a transition period, often about three years without prohibited inputs.
3. Build fertility with compost, manure, legumes and cover crops.
4. Manage pests with rotation, resistant varieties, natural enemies and approved products.
5. Keep records of every input, field operation, harvest and sale.
6. Separate organic and conventional produce in storage and transport.
Trial first
Start with one field or crop to learn. Yields may dip during transition, so budget for it.
Be honest in marketing
Only sell as organic what is certified; otherwise describe practices accurately.
