Potassium is not part of the plant's structure, but it runs the water system, so it affects almost everything we sell.
Why it matters
- Water balance: better stomatal control, so plants cope with heat and drought.
- Quality: bigger fruit, sweeter taste, better colour, longer shelf life.
- Disease tolerance: well-fed plants have stronger tissues.
- Heavy users: banana, potato, tomato, melon and fruit trees.
Signs of shortage
Leaf edges yellow then brown on older leaves, weak stalks that lodge, small or poorly coloured fruit.
Practical
Sandy soils lose potassium by leaching, so apply in splits. Use sulphate of potash for chloride-sensitive crops, and match the rate to soil test and crop removal.
