Seed Drill or Broadcasting: What the Numbers Say

Placing seed at an even depth and spacing saves seed and improves stands. A drill often pays for itself in a few seasons.

Seed Drill or Broadcasting: What the Numbers Say

How you sow affects emergence, uniformity and yield.

Broadcasting

Cheap and fast, but seed lands at uneven depths and density; some is eaten by birds or buried too deep. You usually need a higher seed rate for the same stand.

Seed drill or planter

Places seed at controlled depth and spacing in rows, so emergence is more uniform, seed use is lower, and weeding, spraying and harvesting are easier. Precision planters also allow fertilizer placement.

Weighing it up

Compare the machine cost (or hire cost) with seed saved, higher yield from a better stand and labour saved. Larger fields and high-priced seed (hybrids, vegetables) favour precision sowing more strongly.

Tips

Calibrate the drill, sow into moist soil at the right depth, and keep the seedbed fine and level.
