Mechanization does not have to mean a large tractor.
Right-sized equipment
- Two-wheel (walking) tractors and power tillers for tillage, transport and pumping on small plots.
- Small seeders and transplanters, and mini harvesters or reapers.
- Motorised sprayers, threshers and shellers, which remove some of the heaviest hand labour.
- Pumps and mills for water and processing.
Ways to afford it
- Custom hire: pay per hour or per acre, with no purchase or storage costs.
- Group ownership with neighbours or a cooperative, with a clear booking and maintenance plan.
- Second-hand machines, if inspected and with parts available.
Choose well
Match machine to crop, soil and plot size, and check that parts and mechanics are local. Train operators in safe use, as small machines cause many injuries.
