A good jute bag is predictable: every bag in the batch is the same weight, size and strength. Quality control is how that is achieved.
Checks on the cloth
- Weight: sample bags are weighed on a scale. A bag that is lighter than the specification has less fibre and carries less.
- Weave: the threads are counted and the cloth is held to the light. Gaps let fine seed escape.
- Cleanliness: no oil stains, no damp patches, no mould, no strong smell.
Checks on the bag
- Size: length and width are measured against the order.
- Stitching: seams and hems are inspected for loose ends and skipped stitches.
- Strength: a few bags from each batch are filled and lifted.
Checks on the bale
- The bags in each bale are counted.
- The bale is weighed and the label corrected if needed.
- Straps are checked for tightness and the bale is marked with its origin.
What happens to a failed bag
It is taken out of the batch. Selling the bag cheaper only passes the problem to the farmer, who finds it when the bag splits.
