Bagged fertilizer is heavy and sensitive to moisture. A careful load saves bags, product and time at the other end.

Before loading

Check that the truck bed is clean, dry and free of nails or sharp edges. Do not load fertilizer on a bed that has carried fuel, chemicals or food without cleaning it first. Inspect bags and set aside any that are torn.

Loading

Use pallets and a forklift where possible, with forks kept clear of the bags to avoid puncture. Stack bags crosswise so the stack locks together, and do not stack higher than the pallet or truck rating allows. Strap the load and cover it with a tarp if rain is possible.

After loading

Unload into a dry store, on pallets and away from walls. Keep fertilizer separate from seed, food and jute sacks that will hold produce. Sweep up spills, because loose fertilizer attracts moisture.
