NPK on the Bag: What the Three Numbers Mean

A bag marked 15-15-15 contains 15% nitrogen (N), 15% phosphate (P2O5) and 15% potash (K2O) by weight.

What each does

Compare prices properly

A 50 kg bag of 46-0-0 (urea) holds 23 kg of nitrogen. Divide the bag price by the kilograms of nutrient to compare products fairly; the cheapest bag is not always the cheapest nutrient.

Match to need

Use a soil test to decide which nutrient is short. Applying a balanced blend everywhere often over-supplies one nutrient and under-supplies another.
