Palm kernel meal travels either loose in a lined container or in large jumbo bags. Both work if the meal is dry and the load is handled with care.
Bulk in a lined container
A 20-foot container takes about 20 tonnes. A liner keeps the meal off the steel walls, where condensation forms. Bulk suits feed mills that unload with equipment and use the meal quickly.
Jumbo bags
Jumbo bags hold 1 to 1.5 tonnes. They suit smaller lots and buyers who need to move the meal in parts, and they are easier to keep apart by lot.
Moisture is the risk
Meal at 10 to 12% moisture or lower keeps well. Above that, mould and aflatoxin become a danger. Keep the meal off the floor and away from damp walls, and do not leave an opened load in the rain.
On arrival
Open the doors and look at the surface, smell the meal, feel for heat and lumps, and take a sealed sample before unloading. Use older stock first.
