Sorghum copes with heat and dry spells, but a well-managed field still yields clearly more than a neglected one.
Stand
Aim for an even stand. Grain sorghum is commonly grown at roughly one hundred thousand to one hundred and fifty thousand plants per hectare, lower in drier areas. Thin early, and re-sow gaps within the first weeks.
Feeding and weeds
Sorghum responds to nitrogen; split it between sowing and early growth. Phosphorus at sowing helps early rooting. Weeds are most costly in the first month, so weed early and keep the field clean until the crop shades the ground.
Birds and harvest
Birds can take a large share of ripening heads. Scaring, early planting of the whole area together and timely harvest reduce losses. Harvest when the grain is hard, then dry it fully before bagging.
