Many farms apply the same fertilizer every season because it is what they always did. A soil test replaces habit with evidence.
What a soil test tells you
- pH: whether nutrients are available. Alkaline soils lock up phosphorus and some micronutrients.
- Salinity (EC): whether salts limit growth or irrigation.
- Organic matter: the soil's ability to hold water and feed roots.
- Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium: what is already there.
- Key micronutrients: zinc, iron and others where relevant.
Sampling correctly
- Take several sub-samples across the field and mix them.
- Sample at root depth, away from field edges, tracks and recent fertilizer.
- Label samples clearly.
What to do with the result
The result matters only if it changes a decision: which product, how much, when, and what to skip. Our laboratory service ends every report with a recommendation.
How often
Every one to three years for soil, and whenever the water source changes. Test irrigation water too, especially before installing drip.
