Date Palm Care: Water, Pruning and Pollination

A date palm is a long-term asset; good habits early pay for decades.

Water

Date palms tolerate heat and some salinity but crop best with regular deep irrigation, especially in flowering and fruit growth. Shallow, frequent watering encourages shallow roots.

Pollination

Palms are male or female. Hand-pollinating each female spadix with pollen from a good male improves fruit set and uniformity.

Pruning and thinning

Remove dry fronds and old thorns for access and pest control. Thin fruit bunches so remaining dates grow larger.

Pests and harvest

Check for red palm weevil (holes, fibre, oozing). Harvest at the correct stage for the variety, and protect ripening bunches from rain and birds.
