Many farmers sell right after harvest when supply is highest and prices are lowest.
Why it happens
Everyone harvests at once, cash is needed, and storage space is limited.
Ways to do better
- Store part of the crop if you can keep it sound; compare the expected price rise with storage cost and risk.
- Grade and clean so you sell the good lots at premium and the rest separately.
- Sell in stages rather than all at once to reduce price risk.
- Know the market: follow prices at nearby markets, ask several buyers and consider collective selling with neighbours for volume.
- Cash needs: plan finance so you are not forced to sell at the low.
Count the costs
Include storage losses, interest, labour and risk. A late sale is only better if the net price is higher.
