You cannot improve what you do not measure.
What to record
- Field and crop: area, variety, planting date.
- Operations: tillage, sowing, irrigation, spraying, weeding, harvest, with dates.
- Inputs: what, how much, price.
- Labour and machinery hours.
- Yield and sales: quantity, grade, price, buyer.
- Weather and problems: rainfall, pests, diseases.
Use it
At season end, work out cost per acre, yield per acre and profit per acre for each field and crop. Compare fields and years to see what worked.
Keep it easy
A pocket notebook or simple spreadsheet is enough. Write the same day; memory fades. Back up important records.
Good records also help with credit, buyers and certification.
