Locust outbreaks are managed mainly by national and regional agencies, but farmers play a key part.
Know the signs
Large numbers of grasshopper-like insects gathering, hoppers marching in bands, or swarms arriving after rain in breeding areas.
What to do
- Report promptly to the agricultural office or locust control unit; early control of hopper bands is far cheaper than fighting swarms.
- Do not spray unknown products on your own near water or other farms; follow official advice.
- Protect high-value fields with timely support from control teams, and harvest early where possible.
- Keep records and photos for any assistance schemes.
Everyday grasshoppers
For regular grasshopper damage, scout field edges early; margin treatment often protects the whole field.
