Micronutrients are used in grams, not kilograms, yet a shortage limits yield as surely as lacking nitrogen.
Typical problems
- Zinc: stunted plants, pale bands on young maize leaves, small leaves in fruit trees. Common in alkaline and sandy soils.
- Boron: hollow or cracked stems, poor flower and seed set (sunflower, cotton, vegetables).
- Iron: yellow new leaves with green veins, usually from high pH rather than lack of iron in soil.
- Manganese: interveinal yellowing, in high-pH or waterlogged soils.
What to do
Confirm with soil and leaf tests. Correct with soil or foliar applications at label rates; the gap between enough and toxic is small for boron. Fix pH where it is the real cause.
