Phosphorus is vital for early root growth, but it sticks to soil particles and moves only a few millimetres.
What follows
- Placement matters more than rate: band or place phosphorus near the seed row rather than broadcasting where roots will not reach it.
- Early deficiency shows as stunted, purplish-tinged seedlings in cool soil.
- pH affects availability: very acid or very alkaline soils lock phosphorus up.
- Organic matter and mycorrhizae help roots reach more phosphorus.
Building soil P
In low-P soils, apply enough to build levels over seasons; in soils already high in P, extra gives no yield and can pollute water.
Test the soil before deciding; do not guess.
