How a warehouse is set out matters as much as what is in it.
Layout basics
- Dunnage or pallets to keep bags off the floor and away from damp.
- Stack away from walls (about half a metre) so you can inspect and so air circulates.
- Aisles wide enough to walk and move stock.
- Separate lots by crop, date and quality, with labels.
- First in, first out: sell or use the oldest stock first.
Environment
Roof and walls should keep rain out; ventilation openings should be screened. Avoid direct sun on stacks. Drainage away from the building prevents rising damp.
Hygiene
Sweep regularly, remove spills, keep animals and rodents out, and never store fuel, fertilizer or chemicals with food grain.
Keep a simple stock record: date in, lot, weight, moisture and checks.
