Most tomato disorders trace back to water, calcium or heat rather than disease.
Common symptoms
- Blossom-end rot (black, sunken base): irregular watering stops calcium reaching fruit. Water evenly and mulch.
- Cracking: a dry spell followed by heavy watering. Keep moisture steady.
- Leaf curl with yellowing: often whitefly-borne virus. Control whiteflies early and use tolerant varieties.
- Flowers dropping: night temperatures too high or too low; nothing to spray.
Good habits
Stake or trellis, remove lower leaves touching soil, and rotate away from tomato, pepper and eggplant for two or three seasons.
