Weeds compete for light, water and nutrients, and timing decides how much they cost you.
The critical period
Most crops have an early window, often the first third of their cycle, when weeds do the most harm. Weeds that emerge later, under a closed canopy, matter far less. Keep the field clean through the critical period.
Combine methods
- Clean seed and well-prepared seedbed.
- Crop spacing and rotation that shade out weeds.
- Mulch or cover crops.
- Timely hoeing or cultivation before weeds set seed.
- Herbicide only where useful, at the right stage and rate.
Seed bank
One uncontrolled weed that sets seed can load the soil for years. Stop seed return.
