Strong seedlings, steady feeding and calcium and water balance give chili more flowers and fewer dropped fruit.

Chili pays well per acre, but it is sensitive at flowering.

Nursery

Raise seedlings in clean media under light shade; transplant at 5–6 weeks when stems are sturdy. Harden them off in sun for several days first.

Feeding

Small, frequent doses of nitrogen and potassium; excess nitrogen gives leaves instead of fruit. Avoid wetting leaves late in the day to limit fungal disease.

Flower drop

Heat above about 35 °C, water stress or heavy nitrogen all cause flower and young fruit to drop. Use mulch and even irrigation.

Harvest

Pick green or red according to buyer needs; frequent picking keeps plants producing.
