Foliar feeding delivers nutrients through the leaf, which is fast but limited.
Good uses
- Quick fix of micronutrient deficiencies (zinc, iron, boron, manganese).
- Supplying nutrients at peak demand or when roots cannot take them up (cold, waterlogged or dry soil).
- Calcium sprays on fruit for storage quality, as a supplement.
Limits
Leaves absorb small amounts, so it cannot supply the bulk of nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium for a crop.
How to do it well
Spray early morning or late afternoon, never in hot midday sun; use label rates (too strong burns leaves); cover leaf undersides; add a spreader if recommended; and avoid mixing products that react with each other.
