Moisture is the single most important number in grain storage.
Safe levels (rough guide)
Cereals such as wheat, sorghum and millet are usually stored at about 12–13%; maize about 13%; oilseeds like sesame and sunflower lower, around 6–9%; groundnut kernels about 7–8%. Warm climates call for the lower end of each range.
Why it matters
Above the safe level, moulds and insects multiply and grain heats itself, which can ruin a whole lot and create toxins.
What to do
- Measure with a moisture meter; the teeth test is unreliable.
- Dry quickly after harvest on clean surfaces or dryers, turning often.
- Cool before bagging so moisture does not condense.
- Re-check stored lots periodically, especially after rain or humid weather.
