Make more, spend less: cutting farm costs, saving energy and using technology that pays

Most farm profit is decided by costs and losses, not only by yield. Four areas repeatedly make the difference, and each has a proven, affordable answer.

1. Energy and water

Diesel pumps are a large and unpredictable cost. Solar pumping has no fuel bill and little maintenance, and it pays back fastest where a farm already pumps long hours. Pair it with drip irrigation, which delivers water to the root zone and often uses far less water than flooding.

2. Fertilizer

Fertilizer that the crop cannot use is wasted money. A soil test first, split applications, and the right fertilizer for each stage (urea, DAP, TSP, NPK, bentonite sulphur 90) put every kilogram where it earns.

3. Losses after harvest

A crop lost to rain, mould or pests earns nothing. Drying to the right moisture, cleaning, and storing in breathable jute bags on pallets in a dry room protect the harvest, and let the farmer sell when prices are better.

4. Information

Soil sensors, weather forecasts and simple records show when to irrigate and spray, and which field or crop actually pays. A phone and a notebook are often enough to begin.

A simple order of work

1. Test soil and water.
2. Fix the irrigation and the energy bill.
3. Feed the crop to a written plan.
4. Dry, grade, bag and store properly.
5. Sell at the best time, in the best market, with weights and quality you can prove.

Start small, prove it, expand

Try any new technique on a small plot first. Keep what pays and drop what does not.
